Feds on track to balance budget by 2015, as Flaherty releases modest-stay-the-course-but-stay-tuned-for-next-election budget


Modest investments in Conservative priorities and no bold new initiatives in government’s 2014-2015 budget, but economists say the real action will be next year

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Prime Minister Stephen Harper, pictured on Feb. 11 shortly before Mr. Flaherty released the federal budget in the House. This year’s federal budget projects a $2.9-billion deficit for 2014-2015, with a projected $6.4-billion surplus in 2015-2016, the same year that Canadians will head to the polls and judge the last four years of Mr. Harper’s majority government.
