MPs could vote to waive Parliamentary privilege and allow AG to release his documents

The House of Commons’ Federal Court bid to stop Auditor General Michael Ferguson from releasing correspondence between his office and House committees will likely die without further action if MPs vote to waive Parliamentary privilege protection over the records when the House resumes sitting on Monday, The Hill Times has learned.

Auditor General Michael Ferguson, pictured in this file photo at the National Press Theatre in Ottawa, was about to release correspondence between himself and House committee clerks, but the House lawyers objected and asked the Federal Court to stop Mr. Ferguson from releasing the documents. The documents were requested through an access to information request filed by the NDP research bureau.

PARLIAMENT HILL—The House of Commons’ Federal Court bid to stop Auditor General Michael Ferguson from releasing correspondence between his office and House committees will likely die without further action if MPs vote to waive Parliamentary privilege protection over the records when the House resumes next Monday, The Hill Times has learned.
