Democracy means more than referendums

Re: "Imagine what a real democracy would bring us," (The Hill Times, Letters to the editor, Jan. 10, p. 9). Letter-writer Bruno Marquis makes three mistakes in his call for more referendums. The first is that voting on an issue does not make it democratic. Real democracy requires informed voting. That's why citizens of ancient Athens were required to attend the debates before voting and why political parties don't allow people to sign up and immediately vote in their candidate selection.
