Criminals not the only people who misuse guns

Re: "Criminals will circumvent control measures," (The Hill Times, Letters to the editor, May 21, p. 9). The gun lobby's contention that gun control measures penalize only law-abiding citizens, not criminals, is patently false. Virginia Tech shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, was a law-abiding citizen before the shooting. Moreover, no one is born as a criminal. Most criminals were once law-abiding citizens. Ordinary people can and do become violent, especially when they are too depressed, too zealous or too paranoid and when they have access to guns, their personal failings can quickly become public tragedies. Students who committed the carnage at Columbine High School had no criminal records.
