French debate opens door to more competitive campaign for Duceppe

Leaders could not come up with a solid diagnosis of the state of the Canadian economy, let alone provide voters with at least the outline of a road map for the troubled months ahead.

OTTAWA-Against the backdrop of gut-wrenching drops on the world's financial markets, the issue of the economy mattered more than any other in Wednesday night's French-language debate and on that key topic, the opposition leaders collectively deserve a failing grade.
