About The Hill Times

The very first issue of The Hill Times rolled off the presses on Oct. 5, 1989, changing the world of federal politics and government and media coverage forever.

The Hill Times, an independently-owned newsweekly based in Ottawa, breaks ground and blazes trails every week and has been since 1989. We cover federal politics and the federal government for the savvy political and government insider.

Ottawa City Magazine calls us "influential." Globe and Mail columnist Lawrence Martin says we're "feisty." Doug Fisher says The Hill Times is a "must-read in political Ottawa." The Globe and Mail describes us as "hot." CTV's Ottawa bureau chief Bob Fife says The Hill Times is a "must-read for anybody or anyone who cares about the democratic process." Liberal MP Garth Turner says we're the "inside-the-Beltway bible." Robin Sears also calls us the "political insiders' bible." CBC Newsworld's Politics host Don Newman dubs The Hill Times "the bible of Parliament Hill." And The Toronto Star's Ottawa bureau chief says The Hill Times "delves into political and policy matters that we in the daily, national press can only scratch on the surface."

The Hill Times is closely followed every week by major media outlets and is considered a leading source for federal and political coverage in Ottawa and across the country.

Our readers include Cabinet ministers, MPs, Senators, political staffers, lobbyists, 'backroomers' in all political parties and some of the top decision-makers in the country, including influential players in Parliament, Cabinet, the Prime Minister's Office, the Privy Council, the Finance Department, Treasury Board, the Department of National Defence, the Justice Department, Elections Canada and many more.

We have been giving political players and decision-makers a key platform to communicate with each other within government since 1989.

The Hill Times' website, launched in 1995, is also a lively, hard-hitting, indepth, and, at times, irreverent read.

The Hill Times conducts and publishes exclusive surveys and lists annually, including the infamous "Who Supports Whom" list of the Liberal Caucus published in the spring of 2002. This list attracted weeks of spectacular national media attention.

We publish the top 100 contributors to the major political parties. We also publish the top contributors to Cabinet ministers and party leaders. We regularly survey MPs on public policy issues. We publish some 15 "Public Policy Briefings" every year. Each 'Policy Briefing' includes an in-depth Q&A interview with the key Cabinet minister responsible as well as columns from government and political players involved. This year, we're taking a look at Technology and Government. Health. The Pharmaceutical Industry. Biotechnolgoy. Innovation. Agriculture. Energy. Alternative Energy. Climate Change. Aerospace. Defence and National Security. Canada's North. Innovation Part II. Environment. Natural Resources.

We also have some fun. We publish surveys on the style and culture of Canadian federal politics. We put together "The Year's Best Political and Historical Books," "The Terrific Twenty-Five Staffers on the Hill," "The All Politics Poll," which serves up the best and worst of Canadian politics of the year, and "The Sexy/Best-Dressed Survey," which is a more tongue-in-cheek look at political style on the Hill.

The Reporting
The Hill Times breaks exclusive stories every week.

The Hill Times is an influential, must-read leader in delivering government and federal political coverage.

Led by editor Kate Malloy and senior staff reporters Simon Doyle, Abbas Rana and Bea Vongdouangchanh, The Hill Times, also known as 'HT' on the Hill, offers the inside scoop every week.

Read Simon Doyle's substantive 'Civil Circles' column to find out about the latest goings-on inside the federal bureaucracy.

Read Bea Vongdouangchanh's 'Legislative Process' column to get the inside track on bills and initiatives coming down the pipeline and the backroom moves going on in the legislative world.

Read Abbas Rana's wildly popular 'Hill Climbers' column to track political staffers on the Hill.

Read Angelo Persichilli's Backrooms column to find out more about what's going on inside the government caucus and the Liberal caucus.

Don't miss Ms. Vondouangchanh's Heard on the Hill column, the 'Spin Doctors' column by Mike Storeshaw, Leslie Swartman, Philippe Gagnon and Brad Lavigne, as well as columns by John Chenier, Tom Korski, Joe Jordan, Aaron Freeman, Ken Rubin, Denis Massicotte, Don Lenihan, Jenefer Curtis, Tim Powers and Warren Kinsella, and more every week. And look at Jake Wright's insider, exclusive pictures.

Be informed. Be inside the loop. Enjoy.
