When Yann Martel was in the Commons visitor's gallery on March 28, 2007, along with 49 other accomplished artists invited there to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Canada Council for the Arts, he says he will never forget what he saw. As the House Speaker recognized the special occasion by calling out all 50 artists who each stood, he says he noticed that Prime Minister Stephen Harper wasn't paying any attention to the event or to then-heritage minister Bev Oda's speech. The Prime Minister never looked up at the artists in the gallery and kept himself busy by doing paperwork. Mr. Martel said he found it astonishing, for some reason.
