Well-read political newspaper columnist Don Martin probably lost a few bets after he predicted John Manley would not run in the Liberal leadership race a few months ago. In fact, he wrote his prediction in one of his columns and, of course, shortly after it ran, Mr. Manley threw his hat into the ring and proved Don Martin wrong. Last week, however, after four months in the "race," Mr. Manley accompanied by his wife, Judith, and one of the couple's adult sons, held a press conference in the Charles Lynch Room in the basement of Centre Block to announce that he was dropping out of the Liberal leadership campaign. That was it. He said he couldn't do it any longer. He was walking away.
