The morning of Wednesday, Aug. 3 was an emotional one. The families of murdered or missing indigenous women sat shoulder-to-shoulder in the audience next to politicians, public servants, and advocates while the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, Carolyn Bennett; the Minister of Status of Women, Patty Hajdu; and Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould laid out the details for the long-awaited national inquiry into the disproportionate number of indigenous women who experience violence.
Among other elements of the plan, the ministers named the five commissioners who will now take the lead on the two-year inquest.
