Re: “Spouses of Canadians to get permanent residency immediately: McCallum,” (The Hill Times, Feb. 29, p. 1). Currently, sponsored spouses of Canadians receive conditional permanent residency upon arrival in Canada and have to wait for two years to obtain permanent-resident status. Spouses holding conditional permanent resident status enjoy the same rights and benefits as any other permanent resident. I applied for permanent residency via spousal sponsorship in May 2014 from within Canada (I’m Australian) and I’m still waiting.
